About US

Second Wind Community Band (SWCB) began in 1993 with members of our Cape Breton community representing many different careers and musical backgrounds. Over the years, the group has become a beautiful instrumental ensemble that plays a diverse range of repertoire from classical to pop, and folk.
Second Wind has various levels of talent and experience: from first time players to lapsed players who had musical training as children. We have become a closely knit and dedicated group, where rehearsals are considered an enjoyable social outing as well as a worthwhile musical learning experience.

Events

The Second Wind Community Band hosts four signature events each season. These gatherings not only bring together music enthusiasts from across Atlantic Canada with our BandFest we use our seasonal concerts serve as fundraisers to support meaningful causes close to the band’s heart.

With very few venues available to perform in during performance times of the bands season, the dates available became closer to Christmas and closer to the end of June. We decided to use the Solstice times for our shows.

BandFest

Cape Breton Community BandFest is a great weekend of music and fun activities with people from all over the Maritimes and beyond. Held in the fall its a weekend of fun culminating in a concert for the public.

Winter Christmas Concert

Our annual Christmas concert is all about giving back to the community and bringing the songs of the season to our greater community while supporting local charities.

Spring Triple M concert

The spring equinox is a sign of renewal

We perform a Triple M show to support The Music Therapy Program for Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton County.

Summer Concert series

Each June, we celebrate the conclusion of our season with a special final performance that often aligns with the summer solstice. This marks a time of transition and renewal, both for our band and the community.

Music for Life

Music that was taught and loved in grade school or privately as youngsters, would never leave their souls, especially if they had wonderful training and experiences. It was important for the music student to be able to carry on playing whether they furthered their studies in music or just played in an ensemble or a community group.
